These are based on an idea I've been kicking around for a couple years; each of these characters corresponds with an element and a class of animal.

It's also the first in a series of finished pieces. I've set February 1st as my deadline for completing a character design portfolio, so expect to see a lot more lineups like this.

Here's a sketchbook page from my recent trip to Africa:

As I was drawing this page, a young boy approached me. We didn't speak each other's language at all, but we spend an hour just taking turns with the pencil drawing cartoons.

He turned out to be pretty good (that's his drawing on the bottom right, next to the picture of us). I felt like some art anthropologist who'd just discovered a previously unseen african-manga hybrid style. Most of all (cue sappy orchestral swell) it was proof of the ability cartoons have to connect people across cultural barriers with a language that is truly universal.

Another caricature from the 06 NCN Con in Orlando. This is my friend Greg Halbert, a great artist who's ridiculously tall like me. I found out in Orlando he likes to draw laying down on the floor like an eight year old kid on a rainy day, which I thought was too great not to draw. He and Chris were my heroes when I first started drawing theme park caricatures.
